Congratulations to Mary Margaret Ajiko from the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Global Surgery research group, who has been awarded the 2026 scholarship from the Maria Röhl Memorial Foundation. She receives the scholarship for her work to combat infectious diseases in resource-limited settings.

From the citation

Dr Margaret Ajiko, a researcher at Karolinska Institutet and a general surgeon at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda, embodies the resilience and ingenuity required to combat infectious diseases in resource-limited settings. Serving a catchment area of two million people in the Soroti region, she has become a “voice for the voiceless” and has transformed surgical care where poverty and disease intersect most acutely.

Dr Ajiko’s contributions to infectious diseases and global health are defined by three main pillars: clinical excellence in high-risk settings, advocacy and research in child health, and global mentorship and education.

The scholarship was presented at a ceremony in the Rolf Luft Auditorium at Karolinska University Hospital on October 14, 2026.

The full citation and more information about Margret Ajiko are available on the website of the Maria Röhl Memorial Foundation, Stiftelsen Maria Röhls minne (in Swedish).
