FyFa researcher Maria Lee has received a postdoctoral grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation: Wallenberg - Bienenstock Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme at Stanford. The grant funds two years of studies at Stanford.

Maria Lee is a licensed clinical psychologist and researcher at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience (Centre for Psychiatry Research) and at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa). Her research focuses on people with severe psychiatric conditions, such as schizophrenia and other psychotic syndromes. Maria Lee works in the Carl Sellgren Majkowitz research group at FyFa.

Studies on menopause and severe mental illness

During the fellowship, Maria Lee will collaborate with researchers at Stanford to study menopause and serious mental illness. The title of the project is ‘Menopause and Severe Mental Illness: Risk Factors for New Onset Disorders and the Role of Hormone Therapy in Women with Pre-Existing Mental Health Conditions’.

Crucial for the development of research and research area

Maria Lee describes what the grant means for her research:

“The grant is absolutely crucial for my continued research. It enables me to both develop myself as a researcher and to develop my research area where I will now study women's health in addition to serious mental illness. I will also have the opportunity to develop my methodology where I will learn to work with large data sets and registers. Collaborating with prominent researchers at Stanford will give me new knowledge, as well as new skills and abilities that I look forward to taking back home to Sweden. This will hopefully benefit patients living with serious conditions, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, especially women going through menopause.”

The grant for the two years abroad is approximately $185 000.
