KI strengthens its position in this year’s Shanghai ranking by subject

Karolinska Institutet (KI) has strengthened its position in many key subject areas in the 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) published by Shanghai Ranking. For example, KI now ranks first in the EU in the field of public health.
KI’s position has strengthened across all subject areas in 2026 compared with the previous year – particularly in Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, with an improvement of over 50 per cent. In Public Health, KI now ranks first in the EU. In the field of Human Biological Sciences, KI ranks second in the EU.
In the overall ranking, regardless of subject area, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published on 15 August, saw KI rise to 41st place overall from 50th place last year. KI has thus consolidated its position as one of the world’s leading universities.
