KI scientists to attend 2013 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston
[NEWS 2013-02-12] Karolinska Institutet will be taking part again this year in the AAAS Annual Meeting. AAAS stands for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is one of the world's largest scientific conferences.
The main speaker from Karolinska Institutet is visiting professor and surgeon Paolo Macchiarini, who is known for having successfully transplanted partly synthetic trachea. Professor Macchiarini will be taking part in a symposium titled "Stem Cell-Based Bioartificial Tissues and Organs", at which he will be speaking on the development of the technique for rebuilding complex tissues such as the oesophagus and diaphragm, or organs such as the heart and lungs.
The main theme of this year's programme is the connections between basic and applied research and how fundamental science can create landscapes in which greater understanding, new knowledge and practical applications can flourish.
Previous speakers from Karolinska Institutet at AAAS annual meetings include profs. Hans Rosling (2012), Laura Fratiglioni, Carl Johan Sundberg, Juleen Zierath and Henrik Ehrsson (2011).
The 2013 AAAS Annual Meeting is to be held in Boston, MA, USA, between 14 and 18 February.
The symposium "Stem Cell-Based Bioartificial Tissues and Organs" is scheduled for Monday 18 February, 9:45-11:15 in the Hynes Convention Center, room 207.
