Key protein in the regulation of mitochondria identified
Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have identified a new mitochondrial protein, MIEF1 (Mitochondrial Elongation Factor 1), that is central in controlling the changes of mitochondrial shapes (mitochondrial dynamics).
As a result, the protein will provide new ways of regulating mitochondrial function. This may have far-reaching consequences, for example in understanding neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. The findings are published in the EMBO Journal. Study leader was Professor Monica Nistér.

Human MIEF1 recruits Drp1 to mitochondrial outer membranes and promotes mitochondrial fusion rather than fission.
