Karolinska Institutet gets the go-ahead to educate nurses

[Press Release 2010-03-02] The National Agency for Higher Education (HSV) has today decided to give KI degree-awarding powers for the study programme in nursing. HSV thinks that Karolinska Institutet (KI) can meet the qualitative target and that the right conditions for providing nursing education are in place.

- Our reforms have been successful and we are now ready to accept applications from those who wish to be the nurses of tomorrow, says Sari Ponzer, Dean of Higher Education.

The changes carried out at the university prior to the application regarding the reinstitution of degree-awarding powers were based on the degree ordinance and the views previously provided by the National Agency for Higher Education. A number of changes have taken place on many levels.

  • There is a new thematically devised syllabus which ensures that students´ knowledge is developed well.
  • The competence level among the teachers has been raised.
  • The programme´s academic main field of study of nursing has been further clarified regarding content, guiding concepts and structure.
  • The starting point for this included national and international descriptions of the main field of study and current research within this field.
  • KI, in cooperation with Stockholm County Council, has focused on increasing the academic expertise of supervisors within clinical education.

- We will continue to develop the nursing programme using all of KI´s expertise to build a modern, high quality nursing education, says Sari Ponzer.

The new programme will start in autumn 2010. Prospective students can apply from March 15 up to and including April 15.
