Giola Santoni, biostatistician at the Upper Gastric Intestinal Surgery group at Karolinska Institutet, became docent in epidemiology on April 29, 2025.

Dr. Santoni holds a broad expertise in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, with a focus on cancer outcomes using Nordic registry data. Her work includes large-scale, register-based cohort studies focusing on cancer etiology and outcomes, intervention effects on cancer risk and survival, and socio-economic and lifestyle factors.

She has notable expertise in survival analysis and has developed novel statistical models to better predict cancer-related risks. Her future research will continue to leverage Nordic registry data to explore medication use in relation to the incidence and survival of esophageal and gastric cancers—building on her previous work and contributing meaningfully to prevention and treatment strategies.

Dr. Santoni is the course director for the doctoral course Study Design in Clinical Research and contributes to several other courses with a focus on methodology. She has demonstrated strong pedagogical skills, supported by formal training in university teaching and consistently positive student evaluations. Her approach is rooted in constructive alignment, and she has clear plans for continued educational development at KI.

She has co-supervised multiple PhD students, leads the "Method’s Club" at the Upper GI Surgery unit, and provides methodological support to researchers. She also manages several Swedish and Nordic research databases and collaborates internationally with institutions in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, and the USA.
