From Cell Signaling to the Treatments of the Future
Professor Wendell Lim, this year’s Ulf von Euler Lecturer, seeks to understand how cells communicate and control their functions. By mapping the molecular signals that enable cells to respond to their environment, he aims to understand and influence biological processes with greater precision. His research could contribute to the development of new treatments for cancer and other diseases.

Wendell Lim is a professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he leads the Cell Design Institute. He has been a pioneer in synthetic biology, a field of research that involves redesigning biological systems to understand how they work and to give cells new functions.
A key focus of Wendell Lim’s research is the development of immune cells that can be programmed to recognize and treat diseased tissue. His research group has, among other things, developed so-called synthetic T cells that can make more precise decisions about when and where to become activated for therapeutic purposes. The goal is to create safer and more effective cell therapies for cancer, autoimmune diseases, and degenerative diseases. Lim has received several international awards for his research and has also led major research centers in the fields of synthetic biology and cell therapy.
This autumn, he will be honored as the Ulf von Euler Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, where he will share his latest research findings with the scientific community and the general public.
