Learning difficulties and ADHD often run in families and co-occur, but family resemblance does not by itself reveal whether the underlying processes are genetic, environmental, or causal. Elsje van Bergen will show how genetically informed and family-based designs can help distinguish these explanations, drawing on research on dyslexia, dyscalculia and ADHD. She will also discuss an early reading intervention demonstrating that elevated familial risk does not imply immutability.

KIND invites KI-researchers and staff with an interest in neurodevelopmental conditions, learning difficulties, genetics, education, and related research areas to this talk by Elsje van Bergen.

Learning difficulties and ADHD often run in families and co-occur, but family resemblance does not by itself reveal whether the underlying processes are genetic, environmental, or causal. Elsje van Bergen will show how genetically informed and family-based designs can help distinguish these explanations, drawing on research on dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. She will also discuss an early reading intervention demonstrating that elevated familial risk does not imply immutability.

Elsje van Bergen is Associate Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Visiting Professor at the University of Oslo, and Affiliated at KI. Her research lies at the intersection of genetics, psychology, education, and psychiatry. She studies why learning and neurodevelopmental conditions run in families, and how genetically informed and family-based designs can distinguish causal environmental effects from familial confounding. Her work has been recognised with several major grants and international awards.
