Wednesday, October 29 at 13:00 - 14:00 in room Nils Ringertz, Biomedicum. Title: “Precision Medicine Targeting Chromatin DNA pathology in Heart Failure".

Welcome to guest seminar by Dr. Seitaro Nomura from the Department of Frontier Cardiovascular Science at The University of Tokyo.

Abstract

The heart functions as a vital pump that maintains systemic circulation. Nevertheless, more than 64 million individuals worldwide suffer from heart failure resulting from impaired cardiac function, posing a serious threat to life. This condition arises from complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors that impair cardiac function at the cellular, organ, and systemic levels, ultimately leading to the development of heart failure.

By integrating genomic analyses with single-cell and spatial omics profiling of clinical specimens from heart failure patients, patient-derived iPS cell–based organoids, and disease model animals, we have elucidated the multifaceted molecular mechanisms underlying heart failure pathogenesis. We have identified acquired chromatin DNA damage, in addition to congenital genetic mutations, as a key determinant of heart failure onset and progression, and are developing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies targeting this pathogenic mechanism.

In this seminar, I will present our recent efforts integrating basic and clinical research to elucidate cardiovascular pathophysiology and promote precision medicine for cardiovascular diseases.
