Title: Bridging the gap; cross system working to improve health outcomes in major mental illness.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Fiona Gaughran (King’s College London, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience) will be visiting our department in connection with Honghui Yao’s PhD defense, where she will serve as the external examiner on March 11.

Professor Gaughran is internationally recognized for her work on improving physical health outcomes among people living with major mental illness, and for advancing integrated, cross‑system approaches in mental health care.

As part of her visit, Professor Gaughran will also deliver this open lecture.

Physical health outcomes in psychiatry are affected not just by bodily health directly, but also mental health status. When active, a major mental illness can make it more challenging to optimally manage one’s physical health through standard pathways. Psychotropic medications help many in this regard but carry a separate side effect burden. On top of this, our services are structured separately. How might we start to bridge the gaps across our systems to reduce health disadvantage?
