"Single-cell Imaging of Microbial Communities across Different Spatial and Temporal Scales"

Welcome to a Crossing Border seminar with Jing Yan, Yale University, USA, on Thursday 10 September 2026 in Biomedicum, KI Campus Solna.

Abstract

Biofilm is an important lifestyle of bacteria in which bacterial cells collectively form surface-associated aggregates embedded in a polymeric matrix that they secrete. Important in industry and medicine, biofilms also represent a unique form of growing active matter with distinctive physical and material properties.

Using live imaging of Vibrio cholerae biofilms at single-cell resolution, Jing Yan investigates how bacterial cells interact with each other and their environment to create complex, ordered communities. His work reveals how physical forces, heterogeneity in gene expression, and matrix mechanics shape biofilm architecture across scales.

Host

Crossing borders is a seminar series focusing on interdisciplinary research organised in collaboration with KTH.
