In conjunction with the World Congress of Psychiatry, the World Psychiatric Association, the Swedish Psychiatric Association, the Association for the Improvement of Mental Health Programmes (AMH) and the National Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention of Mental Ill-Health (NASP) at Karolinska Institutet, will organize a Course on Leadership and Professional Skills for Early Career Psychiatrists.
A three day course for early Psychiatrists
This course aims to enhance leadership competencies while supporting professional development and focuses on leadership training, networking opportunities, and the development of collaborative research projects.
The course will take place on the premises of Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm from Sunday September 20th to Tuesday, September 22, immediately preceding the WPA Congress, which begins in Stockholm on September 23. The course is limited to 16 participants and is free of charge.
A combination of individual and group work
The programme combines short lectures with a strong emphasis on individual presentations and interactive group work, enabling participants to reflect on, refine, and strengthen their leadership skills. In addition, the course promotes the expansion of professional networks and actively encourages joint research initiatives among participants.
The course leader
Teaching is led by Professor Norman Sartorius (Association for the Improvement of Mental Health Programmes (AMH)) and Professor Graham Thornicroft (King’s College London).
Professor Norman Sartorius initiated this course in 1994 with the vision of supporting early career psychiatrists who would eventually become mentors, leaders, and opinion-makers in the field of mental health. Since then, more than 3,000 professionals, including psychiatry residents, specialists, and clinical psychologists, have participated in over 150 leadership courses worldwide up to 2025.
