Award to IMM researcher

At the annual meeting of the Swedish Society for Allergology (SFFA) Mikael Adner, Associate Professor at the Unit of Experimental Asthma and Allergy Research was awarded the large SFFA stipend worth 100 000 SEK for his research on "Identifying new mechanisms that cause airway contraction in asthma".

The aim of this innovative research project is to analyse which inflammatory mediators cause airway hyperreactivity. By both studying human small airways, obtained from lung surgery, and using a specifically-developed asthma model in guinea pigs, Mikael Adner's research contributes to mapping the signalling pathways that interact with smooth muscle cells. Mikael Adner's project is of potential clinical importance, as it could lead to new therapies for the large group of asthma patients.
