What did you do before starting at AIMES?

"After finishing my Master’s degree in Biology at the Technical University in Braunschweig, Germany, I started my PhD in 2018 at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI). I joined the group of Prof. Eva Medina in the field of Infectionimmunology investigating the intracellular lifestyle of S. aureus. Working on the interface between host and pathogen and their interaction with each other always thrilled me and I had the chance to widen my skills in bioinformatics during my PhD project. More or less since my bachelor studies I investigate Staphylococcus pathogenesis and I’m happy to bring that knowledge now to the Team of Keira Melican studying its role on human skin", says Julia Lang, Post-doc in Team Melican.

What made you want to join us at AIMES?

"The interdisciplinary environment at AIMES, the exchange of knowledge and technologies between different fields and all this in the bigger context of the Karolinska Institute built a unique opportunity for cutting-edge research. I am really looking forward getting a member of this exceptional group of scientists and learning from each other."

Which are the biggest challenges?

"As I’m coming from basic research, one big challenge will be progressing towards more translational approaches. But I’m sure that the surrounding at AIMES and all the brilliant people around will be an inspiration as well as great support. From a non-academic perspective, learning Swedish will also be a challenge for me."

Tell us something that we don’t know about you?

"Besides research, I like being active in nature. You’ll find me freeride snowboarding in the winter and climbing or cycling during the summer. Stockholm is a perfect spot to enjoy nature directly around the city but also to catch the urban vibe of a metropole. And the water that is all around is just beautiful".
