Torsten Wiesel celebrated on Times Square on his 90th birthday
The Swedish Nobel Leurate and neurophysiologist Torsten Wiesel celebrates his 90th birthday on 3 June 2014. He is honored by Nasdaq on Times Square, New York and by the announcement of a new award from the Young Academy of Sweden.
Torsten Wiesel was born in Sweden in 1924 and received his M.D. at Karolinska Institutet in 1954. He spent over 50 years of his scientific career in the United States. Together with David H. Hubel he received the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Their pioneering research is said to have changed our understanding of how the brain perceives the world around us.
"The Torsten Wiesel Midnight Sun Award for Distinguished Achievement in Promoting Science" will be presented to a person or an organization who has done extraordinary work to explain or promote science.
