The Nordic region's first 2-year Master's programme in medical education

[PRESS RELEASE 1 APRIL 2009] A new Master's programme in medical education is to start at Karolinska Institutet this autumn. The two-year international programme will cover all healthcare professions and be primarily net-based.

"Karolinska Institutet is already internationally known for its medical research," says Charlotte Silén, senior lecturer in medical education and the head of the committee responsible for designing the new programme. "Now we're going to make a name for ourselves in pedagogical research and education too."

The 120-credit Master's programme in medical education is for people with backgrounds in medicine, healthcare or education who are seeking to develop a scientific approach to teaching, supervision and pedagogical leadership. The programme is designed to give the competence needed to improve education and teaching in the academic and healthcare sectors, and to prepare future leaders for various roles in the development of educational and training programmes and in the healthcare field.

Medical education is an interdisciplinary subject based on explanatory models and perspectives from the caring and behavioural sciences, primarily educational theory and practice, but also psychology, sociology and social anthropology. The programme aims to develop knowledge of how learning processes for students, academics, professionals and patients can be encouraged and managed, and to help its students understand the significance of teaching and learning in the characteristic milieus of medicine and healthcare.

The 2-year Master's programme strengthens Karolinska Institutet's position as a Scandinavian and international centre of medical education, and as such is the first of its kind in the Nordic region. Between 20 and 30 students will be admitted onto the programme every other year.
