Termination of former doctoral education subjects
Doctoral students affected by this decision must decide if they intend to complete their doctoral studies or if it is time to terminate them.
Since March 2006, Medical Science is the only subject a new doctoral student can be admitted to, but there are still doctoral students who started before 2006 that are registered for an old subject. The Faculty Board has now decided to discontinue all old doctoral education subjects, and as of 17 December 2021, doctoral education at KI can only be pursued within the doctoral education subject Medical Science.
Doctoral students affected by this decision must decide if they intend to complete their doctoral studies or if it is time to terminate them once and for all. Those intending to complete the doctoral studies, must promptly contact their KI department and read the check list below.
To get a degree in an old subject, an application for thesis defence or licentiate seminar must be submitted by August 2021.
To being able to continue doctoral studies after 2021, the only possibility is to change subject to Medical Science. It will be difficult to motivate a further extensions of a doctoral education that started over 15 years ago, but an assessment must be done for each case. Please note that a change of subject means a different course requirement.
Doctoral students affected by this decision should have received information to their home address, providing they have been active at KI during the past ten years and have a Swedish home address.
"Discontinuing the former doctoral subjects is a question of quality. It is difficult to assure continued quality in an education that started such a long time ago. The old syllabi, 15-20 years old, are out of line with today’s regulations and conditions. This decision completes the intention from 2005 that KI should have only one doctoral education subject" says Robert Harris, Academic vice president for doctoral education.
