Rolf Luft Award is awarded to Lewis C. Cantley

[Press release 2009-1006] The 2009 Rolf Luft Award is to be presented to Professor Lewis C. Cantley of the Harvard Medical School for his discovery of the enzyme phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase). His discovery has helped scientists understand more about the causes of diabetes and cancer.

PI 3-kinase is of great medical interest in its role in the molecular signal pathways that can lead to cancer. The enzyme has also proved instrumental in diabetes through its effect on the cells ability to take up sugar in response to insulin stimulation.

Listen to the prize-winner

The prize-winner will be holding an open lecture on PI 3-kinase and glucose metabolism.

When: Tuesday 6 October, 4.30 5.30 pm.

Where: The Rolf Luft Auditorium, L1:00, Karolinska University Hospital, Solna.

The Rolf Luft Award is awarded to leading researchers active in the fields of endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes. The award comprises a medal, diploma and money. The award committee at the Rolf Luft Diabetes Centre includes professors Per-Olof Berggren and Kerstin Brismar of the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, Karolinska Institutet.
