Renewed funding for MIDWIZE and MISH leadership programs

Both programs have been running since 2020 at the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health - a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and Makerere University in Uganda.

"We are delighted that both training programs will now receive renewed financial support from the Swedish Institute (SI), which makes it possible to continue our efforts to drive innovation in the public sector in Sub-Saharan Africa. 

We have already managed to improve maternal and newborn health and we have promoted innovation and multisectoral collaboration through our programs," says Tobias Alfvén.


Capacity building for public health officials in maternal and child health

  • The program offers a creative and innovative approach to build professional competences and confidence for leaders
  • Aim: to develop the use of evidence-based midwifery practices by capacitating participants to lead quality improvements
  • Organisers: Department of Women's and Children's Health in partnership with universities in Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya

Managing Innovation Sustainable Health 

  • The program allows managers to strengthen their ability to ensure good health and well-being by working with a more holistic, evidence-based, collaborative and innovative approach
  • Aim: to develop capacity to work across sectors using an innovative approach to strengthen both preventive and curative health care
  • Organisers: 
    • Department of Global Public Health at KI
    • Makerere University, Uganda
    • Social innovation company Tinkr
    • Kinshasa School of Public Health, the Democratic Republic of Congo
    • Benadir University, Somalia
