Publication in Gut: Diagnosis and management of adult coeliac disease: guidelines from the British Society of Gastroenterology.

Celiac disease is a chronic immune-mediated disease, that is characterised by small intestinal villous atrophy. This disease affects about 1-2% of the Swedish population, and is one of the most common chronic diseases in children. Whilst serological testing has come to play more important role for the celiac diagnosis, the main message of the international expert panel is that small intestinal biopsy remains the gold standard for celiac diagnosis and cannot be replaced by serology. Furthermore the group underlines the importance of adhering to a strict gluten-free diet.
The expert panel consisted of 18 physicians and 3 non-physicians. Their paper, published in the British journal Gut, constitutes the official guidelines of the British Society of Gastroenterology. The guideline work was coordinated by Professor Jonas Ludvigsson from MEB.
