Niklas Mejhert - new docent at MedH
Congratulations to Niklas Mejhert who has been appointed docent in cell and molecular biology at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge (MedH).

What does the appointment mean to you?
To be appointed docent has been on my radar since I came back to Karolinska Institutet from Harvard University. It basically verifies that the research, teaching and administrative work I have conducted throughout my career, follows a clear path and is of sufficient quality.
What is your research about?
My group is trying to uncover mechanisms regulating cellular lipid turnover. This is an important aspect of cell biology because the ability of cells to store and release energy is a prerequisite for life.
What are your upcoming plans?
There are many examples of diseases characterized by altered lipid turnover, including obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and atherosclerosis. However, the mechanisms allowing cells to sense and adapt to varying levels of energy storage has not yet been identified. Therefore I will look at how energy metabolism at the cellular levels is impacted by health and disease. I also look forward to continuing and extending collaborative efforts with other groups at Campus Flemingsberg.
