New thesis on studies of Bone disease and Diabetes Mellitus

Anna Ugarph from the research group Growth and Metabolism will defend her thesis "Bone disease and Diabetes Mellitus" on September 22, 2017. Main supervisor is Professor Kerstin Brismar.

What is the main focus of your thesis?

Bone disease and Diabetes Mellitus.

Anna Ugarph's-thesis Bone disease and Diabetus MellitusWhich are the most important results?

Patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for fracture. The fracture risk increase further in patients with diabetes complications. Metabolic factors, including the IGF-I system, affect bone.
How can this new knowledge contribute to the improvement of people’s health?
Bone disease and fracture risk should be considered a complication of Diabetes Mellitus. As for cardiovascular complications in Diabetes Mellitus, multiple risk factors should be treated to prevent future fracture in patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Peripheral neuropathy is a risk factor for future fracture.

What are your future ambitions?

We have initiated a randomized case-control study. Patients with newly diagnosed type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and matched controls are identified in primary care and included in the study. We will study Metabolic control, vitamin D status, the IGF- system, bone markers, bone quality, co morbidity, medication, life style factors, ethnicity and socio-economic factors.
