New thesis on genetic alterations in children with leukemia
Ingegerd Ivanov Öfverholm from the group Clinical Genetics will defend her thesis "Identification and evaluation of novel prognostic genetic markers for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia" on March 24, 2017. Main supervisor is associate professor Gisela Barbany.
What's the main focus of your thesis?
Novel prognostic genetic markers for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Which are the most important results?
That a number of newly discovered genetic alterations, such as deletion of the IKZF1-gene, are associated with poor prognosis for children with leukemia.
How can this new knowledge contribute to the improvement of people’s health?
More accurate prognostic genetic markers could refine the clinical risk-evaluation of children diagnosed with leukemia.
What are your future ambitions?
To work for further improvement and personalization of genetic cancer diagnostics.
