New thesis on different methods to foresee local tumor stage in prostate cancer
Fredrik Jäderling at the research group Diagnostic Radiology will defend his thesis "Preoperative local staging of prostate cancer : aspects on predictive models, magnetic resonance imaging and interdisciplinary teamwork" on February 3, 2017. Main Supervisor is Professor Lennart Blomqvist.
What's the main focus of your thesis?
-It addresses different methods to foresee local tumor stage in prostate cancer prior to surgery.
Which are the most important results?
-Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is at this moment the best method to foresee local tumor stage, though not perfect, it reduces positive surgical margins in men receiving an MRI compared to men who do not. This comes at the cost of less nerve sparing procedures, which can affect the preservation of sexual potency and urinary continence.
How can this new knowledge contribute to the improvement of people’s health?
-MRI will in the future play a greater part in the investigation and pretreatment planning in the future.
What are your future ambitions?
-I am participating in several research studies that will run over the coming years that all will promote better care for prostate cancer patients.
