National investigation on school meal quality
[NEWS 2011-03-29] This week, selected schools in 188 Swedish municipalities get access to a new online tool, called SkolmatSverige, to evaluate the quality of the meals served in the schools. The study is the first of its kind in Sweden. Later this autumn, the online tool will be launched to all Swedish schools.
On the first of July 2011 a new Swedish Education Act will come into effect, demanding that school meals should be nutritious. The online tool, developed by researchers at Karolinska Institutet, may therefore be of help for schools and municipalities in complying with new legal requirements.
The 429 schools that will be asked to participate in the study have been selected at random and are spread all over the country. In addition to documenting the school meals, selected schools will also be asked to comment on the tool. This information will be used by the researchers to further develop the tool prior to a national launch in the autumn.
