What did you do before this and why did you choose AIMES?

"I did my bachelor’s degree in Biology and master/PhD degrees in Neurophysiology at University of Tehran, Iran. Further on, I moved to Sweden and initially started a postdoctoral position at the Department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute. After my postdoctoral research, I have decided to enroll for a PhD position in Medical Science at the same lab which I defended in 2017 and it became my second PhD. Then I continued as post doc research associate at SciLifeLab-KTH in advanced Bio-imaging laboratory, part of the Biology core in the Biophysics group. Then I moved back to Karolinska Institute and became Senior lab manager at AIMES since July 2021.

Throughout my education and postdoctoral work, I was leading several interdisciplinary research projects, working with different techniques, and guiding predoctoral and doctoral students. I found this position as Senior Lab Manager at AIMES suitable for myself because AIMES is an interdisciplinary research center which gives me this opportunity to use my expertise. In addition, I like to coordinate and organize the lab environment which I have been always participating on this role during my education and work in the lab!", says Elham Jalalvand.

What are you looking forward to the most at AIMES?

In order to effectively manage a laboratory, Lab Managers must be skilled in the technical aspects of their field as well as soft skills like communication and leadership which are equally as vital to the work of a laboratory manager. In my new roll, I am looking forward to more communications with research groups in AIMES as well as the external collaborators. Along my managerial job I also interested to find the possible contributions in research, training and problem-solving.

What do you think is the biggest challenge?

Getting to this position as Lab Manager was a transition for me from a full-time research position to managerial position but I have found it as an opportunity rather than a challenge. As a Lab Manager needs to know how to run multiple instruments and gets thing done promptly and correctly, I believe this roll also given me an opportunity for further learning.
