Little material damage when Biomedicum site caught fire

The fire at the building site of KI’s new research laboratory Biomedicum at Campus Solna last week was caused by polystyrene sheets that caught fire.

They had been laid as ground insulation between the facade and ventilation tower. A fierce fire centre with smoke flared up against the building and the area was evacuated, but no one was injured. The fire caused glass at the ground level to crack as well as some external non-façade glass sections higher up. There were also some smoke damage on a couple of floors. Akademiska Hus and Skanska are now looking into the cause of the fire and whether it will delay completion of the building.
