Please join us for the interactive digital launch of the centre on the 16th of September, 2021! Karolinska Institutet and Makerere University in Uganda have jointly established the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health. The aim of the centre is to develop capacity and mobilise actions to drive the agenda for sustainable health.

Highlights of the programme

We will together with moderators, keynote speakers and project team explore:

  • Challenges and opportunities for sustainable health 

  • Why the centre has been established? What do we want to achieve? What has been achieved so far?

  • The role of academia and partnerships in achieving sustainable health

There will be reflections and discussions with Professor Ole Petter Ottersen, president of Karolinska Institute and Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, vice chancellor of Makerere University.

The event will be moderated by Erika Bjerström, Senior Foreign News Correspondent with National Swedish Television (SVT) and Roy Mayega, lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, at the School of Public Health, Makerere University.

Giulia Gaudenzi

Giulia Gaudenzi is an affiliated researcher at the Department of Global Public Health and a postdoctoral fellow at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Division of Nanobiotechnology at SciLifeLab. Her research is focusing on the development of point-of-care diagnostics for low-resource settings.

Rawlance Ndejjo

Rawlance Ndejjo is a researcher at Makerere University School of Public Health with over 8 years' experience in teaching and public health research. He coordinates work of the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health at Makerere University.

Tobias Alfvén

Tobias Alfvén is project manager of the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health. He works as senior clinical lecturer at the Department of Global Public Health at Karolinska Institutet and as a pediatrician at Sachs’ children and youth hospital in Stockholm.

Rhoda Wanyenze

Rhoda Wanyenze is a professor and dean of Makerere University School of Public Health and deputy project manager of the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health. She has vast experience in infectious diseases research, capacity building and program management, especially in the area of HIV and TB, and has also conducted several studies in maternal and child health.

Erika Bjerström

Erika Bjerström is a senior foreign news correspondent at Swedish Television (SVT), Sweden’s national public service broadcaster. She is SVT’s Global Climate Correspondent and one of Sweden’s most experienced journalists. She has been a tv-correspondent covering EU, Africa and the USA and has worked in over 100 countries globally. She has also written several books, ”The New Africa” and ”Climate Crisis in Sweden” being her latest.

Roy William Mayega

Dr. Roy William Mayega is a lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, at the School of Public Health, Makerere University, teaching Epidemiology and Research Methodology to both graduate and undergraduate students.
