Karolinska Institutet stable in world rankings
[NEWS 16 August 2011] This year's edition of the prestigious Shanghai ranking shows that Karolinska Institutet remains well placed among the top universities in the world. This year the university is in place 44, ranking the highest among the Swedish universities.
Every year, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University carries out the so-called Shanghai ranking (ARWU). It is one of the world's most prestigious rankings of universities, in which 12 000 universities in the world are ranked and the top 500 are included in the list. The list this year is topped, like previous years, by the U.S. universities Harvard, Stanford, MIT and Berkeley.
Karolinska Institutet is ranked the highest of the Swedish universities with their placement at number 44. It has dropped two places since 2010 but has a slightly higher overall score. Two more Swedish universities are in the top 100, Uppsala University at number 67 and Stockholm University at number 81.
The universities are also ranked in their respective fields. In the category 'Clinical Medicine & Pharmacy', Karolinska Institutet was at number 9, and in 'Life and Agriculture Sciences' at number 17.
The ranking is based on a number of attributes, including research criteria such as the number of Nobel prizes, citations in scientific journals and publications in journals with high impact factor.
