Our colleague and friend, professor emeritus Anders Rane has passed away at 80 years of age.

Anders Rane was raised in Stockholm. He defended his thesis at Karolinska Institutet (KI) 1973, became associate professor 1974 and professor at the Swedish Drug Control in Uppsala 1990. Anders was 1990-2010 professor in clinical pharmacology (initially in Uppsala and from 1998 at KI) combined with positions as director of healthcare services. He was active as senior professor at KI until 2023.

Anders Rane had wide research interests. Early, he studied drug metabolism in neonates and children with new techniques and explored the genetic control of effects and adverse events of drugs in humans. Anders and colleagues introduced during the 80s oral morphine to control severe cancer pain.

He supervised more than 20 PhD-students, published above 400 scientific papers and was since his guest research period in Nashville frequently invited to leading scientific centers and loved to host guest researchers at KI.

Anders  and his team studied doping in sports and leisure and unravelled how genetic factors might influence the results of doping tests. Anders indelible impact in anti-doping work has paved the way for ongoing research at KI and worldwide.

Throughout his career, he continued his engagement in pediatric clinical pharmacology, recently as a member of an European network of pediatric clinical drug trial centers.

Anders was a creative and energetic scientist with an insatiable curiosity, fostering transdisciplinary collaborations. He was known for his kindness and was a master to discover the potential of each individual, showing a genuine interest in the endeavours of others. He was honoured with national and international commissions of trust.

Since young years he had a passion for nature and ornithology and was fond in hunting. That brought him and his family to exotic places. He loved to spend time at the family house in the island Öland. He, supported by his family cultivated cultural talents and wrote a few plays on urgent themes.

Anders Rane is mourned by his wife Kristina, his three children Fredrik, Mattias and Johanna and their families with six grand-children, relatives, friends, colleagues and collaborators.

For friends, colleagues and collaborators.
