The Black Lives Matter movement has brought to life a recurring question: How should we relate to our past? Not least, how should we relate to people who have made important contributions, but who have also stood for, or come to be associated with, values and actions that we now renounce?

How should we at Karolinska Institutet relate to the university's history in our handling of historic monuments and the naming of lecture halls, laboratories, roads, restaurants and more? Should they be preserved in the name of history? Or should everything that we now find offensive be removed? Shall we, for example, remove busts and paintings and change the names of roads and lecture halls to make room for others that deserve to be commemorated? What are the alternatives? What are the arguments?

Welcome to an afternoon focused on Karolinska Institutet’s historical heritage. During the seminar we will also address broader questions of historical justice and how to practically handle various aspects of a university's history.

Speakers and panel members include:

  • Ole Petter Ottersen, President, Karolinska Institutet
  • Malin Arvidsson, Senior Lecturer, Lund University
  • Göran Collste, Professor Emeritus, Linköping University
  • Olof Ljungström, Head of Unit, Medical History and Heritage, Karolinska Institutet
  • Eva Åhrén, Operations director, Medical History and Heritage, Karolinska Institutet
