Håkan Andersson is MBB’s new Director of Undergraduate Education
Starting January 1, 2020, Håkan Andersson is the new director of undergraduate education (grundutbildningsansvarig, GUA) at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, with Bernhard Lohkamp as the deputy.
The education unit, led by Håkan, is busy developing the communication regarding undergraduate teaching within and outside of the department.
One step in this will be to improve the MBB website pertaining to undergraduate teaching, and another is to produce and maintain an internal teacher web in the format of a Canvas course page, where for instance teaching information, such as internal rules and guides, as well as available teaching courses for teacher competence development will be posted.
Another important component is a listing of teaching vacancies. Everyone taking part in teaching should have access to the MBB course site. If you cannot access this site but are involved in teaching, or want to be involved in teaching, please contact Bernhard Lohkamp.
Ongoing work with the new medical programme
As many of you know, a new medical programme is due to start by the autumn of 2021. KI needs governmental approval and will apply by March 15, which will then be reviewed by the Swedish Higher Education Authority (Universitetskanslersämbetet UKÄ). During the spring, we expect an invitation to apply for course responsibility for courses in the new programme. We are aiming for a course in the first term, an analogue to “Den friska människan” (DFM1; “The healthy human 1”) albeit somewhat shorter (16 hp vs 24 hp).

With the new medical programme, novel teaching methods will be introduced, as has been decided on the programme level. Much of our teaching will be given in a Team-Based-Learning (TBL) format, meaning less lecturing and more student- and group centred activities. This will require some extra effort on MBB’s behalf, and we are trying to make sure that the necessary funds can be allocated for teacher competence development in this context.
Other planned and upcoming activities
- We plan to meet with all division heads to discuss the future teaching tasks of MBB.
- Jan-Olov Höög is working to prepare a course curriculum for a Bioinformatics course on the advanced level for the master programme in biomedicine, which we hope will be MBB’s responsibility, due to start in 2021.
If you have any ideas regarding undergraduate teaching, please do not hesitate to contact either Håkan or Bernhard.
