Professor Fratiglioni is a world-leading researcher in the epidemiology of aging. Her scientific contributions have made a clear impact on aging research and have led to the implementation of epidemiologic methods and, in particular, to the introduction of modern methods in geriatric epidemiology. Her research results have had major implications for primary and secondary disease prevention for the elderly. Her earlier work focused on Alzheimer's Disease and other types of dementia. Her current research deals with problems related to multiple diseases, or "multi-morbidity".

"Laura Fratiglioni has been a pioneer both with respect to psychosocial and atherosclerotic risk factors for vascular and neurodegenerative dementia. Her findings regarding the impact of life style, social factors, blood pressure, and diabetes have stimulated researchers around the world and opened new avenues for research. Her research has profound public health and preventive implications", says Professor Anders Ahlbom, chairperson of the prize committee.

The 100,000 SEK prize will be awarded to Professor Fratiglioni at Karolinska Institutet's Installation Ceremony on October 28, 2009.

The Folksam Prize for Epidemiologic Research is financed through a donation from Folksam insurance company, which has long supported and developed research related to the causes of accidents and disease. Upon the retirement of its former CEO, Tore Andersson, Folksam decided to donate money to Karolinska Institutet to be used for an annual prize in his name. The prize is awarded over a four-year period for epidemiologic research, particularly that which uses epidemiologic materials for disease prevention and public health. Folksam has decided to continue this donation under the name Folksam Prize for Epidemiologic Research.
