On Friday May 25, Kathleen Bokenberger will defend her thesis "The role of sleep and shift work in dementia and cognitive aging: an epidemiological approach". Professor Carol Brayne from Cambridge Institute of Public Health, University of Cambridge will be her opponent. Kathleen's supervisors are Anna Dahl Aslan, Nancy Pedersen and Torbjörn Åkerstedt.
Kathleen's thesis has combined unique population-based data sources and modern epidemiological methods to evaluate the role of sleep and shift work in dementia and cognitive aging. While shift work did not appear to explain differences in rate of normative cognitive change in later life, findings indicate that shift work and sleep characteristics are associated with increased risk of dementia.
