In this talk design principles and requirements for meaningful and tailormade monitoring of animal welfare in animal research are discussed. The aim of these CPD webinars (Continuing professional development) is to follow the legal requirements for maintenance and demonstration of competence in laboratory animal science, and to facilitate the implementations of the 3R’s in routine animal work.

“The use of score sheets to improve animal welfare assessment and science”

Abstract

Score sheets are important tools to safeguard lab animal welfare and good science but only if they are designed carefully. Score sheets formalize and standardize the assessment of welfare and make it possible to record the impacts of scientific procedures. Ideally, the data obtained from score sheets should also drive the development and facilitate the implementation of measures such as refined analgesia, intensive care or humane endpoints to improve the welfare of animals used in research.

However, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to scoring animal welfare, not all parameters commonly assessed are actually relevant for all experiments and ongoing development of score sheets is crucial to increase the accuracy and specificity of scoring systems.

In this talk design principles and requirements for meaningful and tailormade monitoring of animal welfare in animal research are discussed.
