The aim of these CPD webinars (Continuing professional development) is to follow the legal requirements for maintenance and demonstration of competence in laboratory animal science, and to facilitate the implementations of the 3R’s in routine animal work.

Speaker

Prof. Adrian J. Smith, Secretary of 3Rs platform Norecopa.

Prof. Adrian J. Smith has had a special interest in 3R resources for many years and has co-authored several databases in this area which are now incorporated into their website. He is the lead author of the PREPARE guidelines for planning animal experiments and manages the Refinement Wiki.

Abstract

Fish research has its own special set of challenges, partly because we know less about the needs of aquatic animals, and partly because the few guidelines that do exist often treat “fish” as if they were one species.

These issues, as well as the increasing use of genetically altered fish in genomics research and greater acceptance of their ability to experience pain and distress, make it imperative to have access to the latest resources on their care and use.

Norecopa, with financial and scientific support from the RSPCA’s Animal in Science Department, has expanded the PREPARE guidelines for planning animal studies to include additional sections for fish researchers. These, and key resources for fish research, will be discussed.
