Other Visit one of the largest zebrafish facilities in the Nordic Region

Karolinska Institutet’s zebrafish facility is the largest core facility for zebrafish in the Nordic region. During Nobel Calling week, the facility will be offering guided tours where you’ll be able to see the fish and learn about their importance to medical research.
The hour-long tour will show you everything from the equipment we use, how we breed the fish and the research being done on them. You will find out what a large animal research facility looks like and how we make sure the fish have the best possible lives and learn about the research fields they’re used in and how much they can actually contribute to the development of new drugs and the understanding of human disease.
If you’ve never seen a green heart pumping away or red blood cells flying around in the vascular system, now’s your chance. Step into this world in the company of facility staff.
- See how zebrafish are bred, from mating and fertilisation to adulthood.
- Lean the difference between the sexes and how we keep tabs on all these animals.
- Peer down one of our many microscopes to observe the embryos and fry at different stages of development.
- See fluorescence glow inside living fry.
The tours are arranged by KI’s Comparative Medicine unit.
Times and registration
There are two tours a day:
- Monday 6 October, 9 am and 12 pm.
- Tuesday 7 October, 9 am and 12 pm.
- Thursday 9 October, 9 am and 12 pm.
Tours are open to the public but advance registration is required. Max 12 people per tour.
Visitors will be able to ask questions both during and after the tour. The tours are being arranged by zebrafish core facility staff.
Nobel Calling Stockholm
The announcement of the year’s new Nobel laureates turns the world’s attention onto Stockholm. To mark the occasion, the Nobel Prize Museum is teaming up with KI and other institutions to turn the city into a hub of science, research and technology under the name Nobel Calling.
