Nanocellulose is a sustainable, renewable material prepared from cellulose fibres. Sweden are at the forefront of developing nanocellulose applications. For example, nanocellulose could be used in food packaging to produce films with good mechanical, optical, thermal, and oxygen barrier properties. Nanocellulose could provide scaffolds for tissue regeneration, and could be used to create tuneable, ‘smart’, and biomimetic materials. However, in vitro and animal studies indicate that nanocellulose has toxic effects. During this seminar, two internationally well-known experts on nanotoxicology will present the current knowledge about the toxicity of nanocellulose.
