Lectures and seminars The craft of effective professional writing
When it comes to communication, busy professionals face a dilemma: the more you know, the more difficult it can be to communicate what you know clearly and persuasively.
As a professional, you acquire expertise in your field, but that expertise can't do much good - for you or for anyone else - when it's just sitting in your head. To share it with others, you need to organize your material, structure your ideas, and convey the value of your concepts in language that is both precise enough to be accurate and direct enough to be clear. And you need to do all of this fast.
This lecture (Part 1) and workshop (Part 2) will show how writing can increase, or destroy, the perceived value of scientific work. The workshop will note some of the writing habits through which many scholars undermine the value of their work, usually as they pursue mistaken notions of clarity. We will devote most of the session to specific writing techniques for increasing the value of academic work.

About the speaker
Dr Larry McEnerney is the director of the writing program at the University of Chicago, where he works primarily with faculty and advanced graduate students. The University of Chicago has the only program in the United States that specializes in such 'expert writing': writing done by those who command advanced knowledge of a field and who must deploy that knowledge through their writing.
Dr McEnerney is also a consultant for universities, research institutes, academic societies and journals, governments, business and professional firms. In addition to his work in the US and Canada, he has consulted throughout the European Union and in such other countries as Russia, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Brazil, and Argentina.
