Speaker’s biography

Kai Savolainen

Kai Savolainen, M.D., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus after 20 years (1998–2018) at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) in Helsinki in that position. He was previously Professor of Toxicology and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the University of Kuopio. He obtained his M.D. degree in 1976, and Ph.D. degree in Medicine in 1981, at the University of Helsinki. He also earned a Ph.D. degree in Toxicology at the University of Kansas in 1987 during his postdoctoral training. He led nanotoxicology research at FIOH during 2004–2018 and was Director of the Nanosafety Research Centre at FIOH during 2011–2016. He has coordinated several large EU projects including NANOSOLUTIONS (2013–2017) with 35 partners and more than 200 scientists from five continents. He also coordinated the EU Nanosafety Cluster during 2011–2017. The cluster included more than 50 EU funded nanosafety research projects from most EU member states, and hundreds of nanosafety scientists. This forum was instrumental in establishing the EU Strategic Nanosafety Research Agenda for the Horizon Framework Program. Prof. Savolainen also served in several EU and WHO (IARC) scientific committees and evaluated nanosafety research applications in research funding programs in several EU Member States. Currently, he is Chief Editor of Human and Experimental Toxicology and member of the editorial board of several other journals.

SweNanoSafe is a national nanosafety platform commissioned by the Ministry of Environment in 2016. The platform has been hosted by IMM since 2019. The emphasis is on promoting a dialogue between stakeholders including academia and government agencies to promote the safe handling and use of nanomaterials.
