We’re living in difficult times, researchers as much as anyone else. Academic freedoms are being encroached upon around the world and revolutionary discoveries of benefit to humankind are in danger of being postponed or even cancelled.

Welcome to an important discussion on how we can protect science in a troubled world on Monday 6 October at 18:00 to 19:00 at the Nobel Prize Museum, Stortorget 2, Stockholm.

Successful knowledge-driven and socially relevant research requires academic freedom and the right of researchers to freely choose their topics of inquiry, research methods and platforms of publication without pressure or the risk of reprisal. Recently, however, we’ve seen research grants being withdrawn with immediate effect, collaborations being terminated, data being blocked and researchers being barred from attending conferences, while many terms have been flagged as problematic and their use forbidden. When democratic values are undermined, research risks being shackled by extremist forces and political decrees.

In many countries, Sweden included, many subjects are struggling to attract students, and without a new generation of graduates able to enter research in these fields, it is likely that they will fall by the wayside.

How serious is this risk, what are its possible ramifications and what can we do to about it?

The seminar is arranged by the Stockholm School of Economics, Karolinska Institutet, the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and the Swedish Research Council.

Nobel Calling Stockholm

The announcement of the year’s new Nobel laureates turns the world’s attention onto Stockholm. To mark the occasion, the Nobel Prize Museum is teaming up with KI and other institutions to turn the city into a hub of science, research and technology under the name Nobel Calling. In the true spirit of knowledge, KI will be one of many sources of inspiration and enlightenment. View the full programme here.
