Title: Investigating the impact of childhood adversity on mental health using causal inference methods
Abstract
It is well-established that childhood adversity is associated with mental health problems. However, there is a lot that we still do not understand about the effects of childhood adversity on mental health. For example, it is unclear to what extent these associations are causal, or whether findings differ according to how childhood adversity is measured. It is also unclear whether screening for childhood adversity would enable us to effectively identify individuals at risk of later mental health problems. In my presentation, I will describe new studies addressing these questions through the application of novel statistical methods to longitudinal data. These new insights can help to inform the development of interventions to prevent mental health problems in children exposed to adversity.
