Prof Barrientos’ lab primary research focus is on the fundamental mechanisms that control the biogenesis of mitochondrial protein complexes in the contexts of health, disease, and aging. Specifically, the group focuses on understanding the assembly and function of the mitochondrial translation machinery, as well as the components of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and oxidative phosphorylation system, which are key to biological energy transduction.
