The burden of metabolic complications caused by overnutrition and obesity will eventually collapse our health care system. The activation of human brown adipose tissue (BAT) and its thermogenic UCP1 is an active research area to increase energy expenditure and correct obesity and metabolic parameters.
My group deciphers the evolution of BAT and UCP1 to reveal the blueprint of how nature wired metabolic networks into fat and how evolution rendered UCP1 a thermogenic protein, aiming to activate thermogenic programs in human fat and to design specific UCP1 activators.
