Dr. Martha Somerman is a world-renowned mineralized tissue scientist. Director of the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) / NIH for a period of 9 years (2011-2019). Over the past decade, she has been the driving force for transiting not only the NIDCR, but also the global dental community, from its basic research cradle to the translational research scope that it holds today.

Prior to becoming NIDCR director, Dr. Somerman was dean of the University of Washington School of Dentistry, a position she had held since 2002. From 1991 to 2002, Dr. Somerman was on the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry where she served as a professor and chair of periodontics/prevention and geriatrics, and also held an appointment as professor of pharmacology at the School of Medicine.

Lecture: "Oral-Systemic Integration: Where to begin?"

Short talk introduction by KI researcher Georgios Belibasakis, Professor of Clinical Oral Infection Biology and Head of the Division of Oral Diseases, which includes Cariology, Endodontics, Oral Health and Periodontology. He is also Head of Research and Head of International Affairs at the Department of Dental Medicine:"Dentistry and beyond".

The lecture will be followed by an afternoon reception in the Neo entrance hall with possibility to interact and ask questions. A small group discussion with Dr. Somerman will follow after the talk under the coordination of Georgios Belibasakis.

This lecture series will be IRL only. No registration needed.
