Lectures and seminars Junior faculty seminar: To serve as the opponent/external examiner - Preparations are key.
Welcome to a lecture for MEB's Junior Faculty with Professor Jonas Ludvigsson!
Title: ”To serve as the opponent/external examiner - Preparations are key"
Jonas F Ludvigsson has served as thesis opponent 13 times. To act as the opponent is to prepare, and set the expectations for everyone right. It helps to prepare.
In this talk Jonas will speak about ”when should you agree to serve as the opponent”, how much time do you need to allocate, and how many questions should you prepare?
What practical preparations are necessary? Who is the thesis defence about (the PhD student, obviously, not about the opponent), How do you make the PhD student less nervous?
Do you prepare slides of your own? Some standard questions, and what do you buy as a gift for the PhD student?
Even if you are not planning to serve as opponent, this lecture might help you to prepare as a supervisor for your own PhD student’s defence.
