Jöns Jacob Berzelius was the most prominent among the founders of the Karolinska Institute in 1810. He also profoundly influenced the scientific approach and teaching methods for physicians, making the young institution ahead of its time with a modern view on experiments, observations, and the dynamics of living systems.

Berzelius held professorships in medicine, pharmacology, and physiology at KI. Furthermore, he was widely regarded as the leading chemist in the world during his time and paved the way for the era of modern chemistry.
