Title

"Viruses of archaea: the friendly side of the virosphere"

Speaker

Professor Mart Krupovic, Institut Pasteur, France

Mart Krupovic is the Head of the Archaeal Virology Unit in the Department of Microbiology at Institut Pasteur of Paris, France. He received his Ph.D. in 2010 in General Microbiology from the University of Helsinki, Finland. His current research focuses on the diversity, origin, and evolution of the virosphere, trying to decipher deep evolutionary connections between distantly related virus groups, with the goal of understanding the global organization of the virus world. As part of this effort, his group focuses on the archaeal virosphere, one of the least explored parts of the global virome. The research on archaeal viruses includes exploration of their diversity in different environments, characterization of structurally diverse virions, and study of molecular mechanisms of virus-host interactions. Dr. Krupovic serves as an editor or on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals and is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). He is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, European Academy of Microbiology and Academia Europaea.
