Presenter:

Abstract

Dr Robert Wurtz is the Founding Director of the well-known Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research at NIH.

He pioneered the study of the visual system of the awake monkey by using single cell recordings from different parts of the visual system (V1, MT, superior colliculus) during behaviour. One classic work is the demonstration that the basal ganglia elicits saccadic eye movement by disinhibition of circuits in the superior colliculus, initiated from striatum and mediated by the SNr.

The topic here is his recent demonstration of the importance of the corollary discharge for perception during eye movements. He is a member of the National Academy, has received many prizes including the Gruber Prize and has been president of the Society of Neuroscience.
